瘦素基因缺失小鼠是研究胰岛素抵抗、肥胖、II型糖尿病等疾病的重要工具。瘦素基因的突变或缺失会导致严重的肥胖、肥胖引起的性腺功能不足,并与II型糖尿病的发展密切相关。研究还发现瘦素与心血管功能相关。该小鼠通常也称为ob/ob小鼠
