Aging and Longevity Research
C. elegans has about 20,000 genes and its homologues have been identified for 60–80% of human genes. The classic signaling pathway affecting aging - insulin signaling pathway - was first discovered in C. elegans. Other signaling pathways that influence aging, such as FOXO signals, TOR signals, sirtuin signals, dietary restrictions are also conserved in humans. In addition, C. elegans has a short life span of 2-3 weeks under normal temperature conditions, making it a suitable choice for the study of phenotypes and mechanisms of aging.
